About Dreamland Volunteer Hope for Ghana -DVHG

Dreamland Volunteer Hope for Ghana established in 2010 is Non-Profit Making, Non-Governmental Organization committed to improving the lives of deprived communities in Ghana.  We are dedicated to providing year-round programmes for local and international volunteers to interact in development by participating in projects designed to enrich the lives of vulnerable children and women in rural communities. DVHG aims to find volunteer placements and provide support for individual or group volunteers who want to visit and support projects in Ghana. Dreamland Volunteer Hope for Ghana is an offspring of the Dreamland School and Orphanage located at Akumadan in the Ashanti region of Ghana. We also organize tour for our volunteers, who want to tour any part of Ghana to see the beautiful tourist attractions in Ghana.

Dreamland Volunteer Hope for Ghana is a volunteering organization established and run in Ghana.  It is to improve the education, health, environment, inter-cultural programs, and well-being of Ghanaians.

MISSION STATEMENT

Dreamland Volunteer Hope for Ghana is established to provide Volunteer opportunities for those who wish to travel to Ghana and to assist in developmental projects in Ghana.

Our Mission is based on the fact that every child is entitled to safety, good health, education and nurturing environment that will lead to uplifting of the community.  In order to achieve this, our value is Integrity, Compassion and Efficiency.

OBJECTIVES

To achieve our Mission, Dreamland Volunteer Hope for Ghana (DVHG) has among other things the following objectives:

  1. To encourage international and local volunteers towards volunteerism to contribute in community development.
  2. To fight poverty, strengthen the capacity of disadvantaged peoples and communities; support initiative for peace, human rights and equity and mobilize resources for development.
  3. Provide deprived communities with projects aimed at poverty alleviation and to support organizations that are involved in helping the needy children and disabled people.
  4. Initiate community based programmes to educate the youth on issues that affect their lives.
  5. Provide opportunity through affordable volunteering and touring programmes.
Volunteering

Our work promotes international cooperation, friendship, cultural exchange and sustainable socio-economic development through voluntary work placements. We believe that volunteering should be a two way benefit where the placement should interest the volunteer and be suitable for your needs to gain practical work experience, enhance resume, networking with overland adventures while you are also able to assist your 'Host'.

About Ghana

Ghana is one of the most beautiful, friendly and peaceful countries in Africa and the world in general. It located at the western part of Africa and has a tropical climate (hot and wet weathers) The country has many environments such as tropical rainforest, white beaches and deserts as well as hilly and mountainous sites.  The people who are general hospitable are made up of many ethnic groups – the largest being the Akans. Ghana has a population of about 21 million and is acclaimed one of the best democratic countries in Africa. The country has a very stable and vibrant democracy.

There are many tourist sites such as the largest natural Lake in the world (Lake Bosomtwe), the Mole National Park, the Salaga Slave Market, the Paga Crocodile Pond, the Dutch and the Portuguese Forts where slave lodged, the Buti and Kintampo Water Falls, the Fiema Monkey Sanctuary among others.

Who Can Volunteer?

People of both sexes (males and females) between the ages of 16 and 70 years are allowed to participate in any of the voluntary activities carried out by DVHG.  However, volunteers must be able to speak the English language as a medium of communication or must come with their interpreters on their visit.

ACTIVITIES VOLUNTEERS CAN ENGAGE IN UNDER DVHG

 

A.        TEACHING IN SCHOOLS

Volunteers who want to be teaching in Basic Private and Public Schools in Ghanamay apply under this module. Such volunteers will be required to one of more of the following subjects studied under the Ghana Education system:

  1. English Language
  2. Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
  3. Mathematics
  4. Integrated Science
  5. Social Studies
  6. French Language
  7. Creative Art (Drawing and Painting)

Teaching at the Basic level involves teaching children from the Nursery up to Junior High School.  Volunteers who choose this module will have to teach the children from Monday to Friday with actual teaching periods of between 2 – 5 hours a day.  Depending on the subject(s) a volunteer chooses he/she will cover some hours a day.

Children to handle under this activity shall include:

  1. Nursery and Kindergarten (2 – 5 years)
  2. Stage/Primary 1 (5 – 6 years)
  3. Stage/Primary 2 (6 – 7 years)
  4. Stage/Primary 3 (7 – 8 years)
  5. Stage/Primary 4 (8 – 9 years)
  6. Stage/Primary 5 (9 – 10 years)
  7. Stage/Primary 6 (10 – 11 years)
  8. JHS One   (11 – 12 years)
  9. JHS Two  (12 – 13 years)
  10. JHS Three (13 – 14 years)
B.        CARING FOR ORPHANS IN ORPHANAGE

Ghana has many orphans. Sometimes they are children of illiterate teenage mothers, who could not face the task of bringing up kids. Often, the parents have died or the child had to be abandoned due to abject poverty. Many orphanages have been established in Ghanaby Churches, Individuals and Organisations to take care of these needy children.  

The job responsibilities of volunteers who offer to care for orphans in Ghanadepend on the need of the orphanage as well as the skills and interests of the volunteers. In most cases volunteers will be handling areas such:

Volunteers who want to work under this module must have love for children and willingness to share their time and compassion with patience and flexibility.

C. PROVISION OF HEALTHCARE (IN HOSPITALS, CLINICS & COMMUNITIES)

Activities under this module include the following and volunteers wishing to work in this area must have knowledge in healthcare.

D.        ENGAGING IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION WORKS

Construction may be in the areas of school blocks, hospitals/clinics, toilets, library, and community centres. Volunteers who may want to work in this area must have knowledge and experience in building construction such as masons, painters, carpenters, steel-benders, plumbers, electricians and architect who may provide technical knowledge to these professionals in the building construction. Volunteers who opt for this area will do practical building works for Dreamland School, Hospitals, Clinics and Communities who may need their help.

E.        TOURISM (VISITS TO TOURIST SITES IN GHANA

Some volunteers may also wish to come to Ghanathrough DVHG just to visit and tour some parts of Ghanaand some places and interest.  Such places of interest abound in Ghanaand volunteers who join DVHG will surely meet their ambition and will never regret they did.  DVHG has experience people who will take volunteers to any interested place they may wish to visit.

How Long can Volunteers Stay with DVHG?

Depending on the activity a volunteer chooses, volunteers may stay from between 1 week and 1 year under DVHG programmes.

This amount is to be paid on arrival by the volunteer to cover the under-listed expenses on the volunteer. It is paid to the Project 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This amount includes the following:

  1. Pick up from airport
  2. A night accommodation in Accra
  3. Travelling & Transport from Accra to Project site and back to Accra
  4. Meals, three (3) times a day - breakfast, lunch and supper
  5. In country support
  6. Cultural orientation
  7. Recommendations and Certificate.

The amount excludes the following:

  1. Air ticket
  2. Movements within Ghanafor personal reasons
  3. Extra food
  4. Medical bills and others

The following services or facilities are also provided free of charge for volunteers by the project host or DVHG.

PAYMENT

The Project cost (fee) must be paid to Dreamland Volunteer Hope for Ghana immediately on arrival in the country. This provides us enough room to prepare for volunteer’s visit. Volunteers are advised to pay the project cost (fee) on time so that we can plan the visit successfully.
